Nations & nationalities are not inherent categories

What’s something you believe everyone should know.

They’re constructions of approximately the last 200 years. Much of the conflict we see globally can be traced back to entirely arbitrary geographical boundaries being drawn up by what are now former imperial powers. Of course humans naturally form groups, communities and societies, but the nation states of today are not a direct reflection of those groupings.

My awareness of this began during high school, when I studied the unification of germany under Bismarck, and grew when I went to university and studied International History & International Politics.

Recognizing the artificial nature of the categories that we’re used to seeing presented by governments, media, and fringe movements really underlines the idiocy of the racist narratives currently dominating European politics.
